Advocacy and Multicultural Care

Within the last century the concept of health has expanded beyond the mere criteria of the presence or absence of illness. “Health” is now conceptualized as part of an overall notion of wellness, which includes social, economic, and psychological wellbeing (Harris, 2010). This broad conception of health was codified decades ago in the World Health Organization’s definition of health as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, rather than merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 1948). The orienting concept of wellness suggests that in order to improve the health of individuals, we must begin to think and conceptualize in terms of a healthy society. Yet, if larger social structures are often barriers to the attainment of health and wellness for certain communities, how can healthcare professionals influence those systems? This course presents an overview of new innovations in multicultural care and service delivery. Drawing upon material from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, you will be guided through the national standards in the United States for working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures. The training also reviews the changing landscape of mental health service provision, along with key concepts that relate to your role in the alleviation of oppression and health disparities. Detailed examples of individual and organizational applications of multicultural care will help you to apply these concepts in your own setting. This module is text-based.
