Managing Reactions to Suicidal Clients: A Guide for Clinicians

Many clinicians report that responding to suicide-related statements is the most stressful experience in therapy. Most identify client suicide as their greatest professional fear. Clinicians who lose a client to suicide often experience profound emotional and professional effects.

This course discusses challenges clinicians face when treating clients who are suicidal and common emotional responses to surviving a suicidal loss. It identifies common emotional reactions to treating suicidality and how clinicians can cope. Lastly, it indicates ways clinicians and clinical supervisors can manage emotional responses following a client’s suicide.
