Overview of Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy and confidentiality of school records for all students with and without disabilities. Students with disabilities who are enrolled in infant-toddler programs and early education programs that are sponsored by state and local education agencies are also covered under FERPA.

This course explains the scope, nature, general rules, and exceptions to those rules as applied to general and special education students alike. This includes early education (birth to 3 years of age), preschool (3 to 6 years of age), and school age (6 to 21 years of age).

Please note that paraprofessionals have several different terms such as teacher aide, special education assistant, and para pro. For the purpose of this course, we will be using the term special education paraprofessional (SEP).
