Rapid Review: Implanted Port Care

The implanted venous access port or IVAP has a reservoir unit which is surgically placed in a pocket under the skin and sutured into place. IVAPs are either single or double lumen with one or two access points. An IVAP supports continuous intravenous access for infusions, medications, and blood samples. When caring for an individual with an implanted port, you need to be familiar with how to access and de-access the port. Follow your organization’s policy on accessing and de-accessing IVAPs.
